The Pickin' Porch
Townsend, TN
July10, 2010

Concert 7:00 pm

Workshops begin at 11:00 am

This Pickin' Porch concert and workshops in "the quiet side of the Smokies" has become a hub for great music during the summer and fall months in the beautiful Smokie Mountains. Mike and Connie Clemmer have the "Wood-n-Strings Dulcimer Shop" where Mike makes and sells beautiful mountain dulcimers.

We'll be teaching workshops during the day- Steve on Clawhammer Banjo and Fingerstyle Guitar, and I on Hammered Dulcimer. See below for the workshops we'll offer.

In the evening, when the cool mountain air refreshes the day, we'll be performing a free concert at 7:00 p.m. so come on out!

~Ruth

Workshop Fees: $25.00 for one; $40.00 for two

Hammered Dulcimer (Beginners) with Ruth 10:00 - 11:30 AM
Let’s take it “from the top” with the basics: holding hammers, instrument layout, tuning, and
anything else you’d like to know. No music or hammered dulcimer playing experience necessary.

Hammered Dulcimer (Intermediate) with Ruth 1:00 - 2:30 PM

“Tune-based Exercises”Technique exercises don’t have to be dull. Have fun and be productive as we practice musical phrases used in many common tunes and, before you know it, you’ve learned a new tune!

Hammered Dulcimer (Int./Advanced) with Ruth 3:00 - 4:30 PM

From Heart to Hands: Learn to play with greater expressiveness using specific arranging tools and techniques. We’ll apply these techniques to a lovely Celtic melody to play more from the heart.

Clawhammer Banjo (Beginners) with Steve 1:00 - 2:30 PM

For those who want to learn the old-time, Southern Appalachian way of playing banjo. Basic right-hand clawhammer pattern, simple chords, and melodies will be taught. For Advanced Beginners (those who can play some clawhammer already), drop-thumb right-hand patterns will also be taught.

Fingerstyle Guitar (Intermediate) with Steve 3:00 - 4:30 PM

For guitar players who want to learn the alternating thumb rhythm/bass pattern combined with melody/accent fingerpicking. Ability to smoothly play simple chords Am, E7, and F required. Doc Watson’s version of the John D. Loudermilk song “Windy & Warm” will be taught.
